Using Orthodontic Elastics

You may wonder how orthodontic elastics correct tooth position and why they are needed in addition to braces.

Has your Orthodontist recommended elastics as part of your treatment plan?

Elastics come in various strengths, as indicated by fun animal names on these packs.

What is the purpose of orthodontic elastics?

  • While braces straighten teeth and close spaces, elastics, attached to hooks on braces, influence the way teeth touch each other, known as the bite.

  • Elastics are often the influence that move teeth in a direction that braces alone cannot.

Using Elastics

  • Elastics are used in a variety of ways during orthodontic treatment. They attach to hooks on braces with a specific intention. How elastics are used varies from person to person, so if you see someone with elastics attached differently than how you wear them, it doesn’t mean theirs is attached incorrectly.

  • When your braces are placed, the orthodontist and clinical assistant will show you how to attach elastics to reach your smile goals. They will review elastics at every visit so you feel comfortable with how and when to wear them.

  • Some patients wear elastics all day and night, removing only for eating and brushing. Other patients only have to wear them for 12 hours, after dinner and during sleep. Wearing elastics as instructed is the best way to insure that your orthodontic treatment stays on track and on time.

  • Packs of elastics usually include 100 elastics. It’s best to have several packs strategically placed so you are never without them. This might include carrying them in a backpack or briefcase for school or work, in the car, bathroom or sports bag.

  • Elastics are provided by your orthodontic office. Never use a different type of elastic than what has been recommended. This can have a negative effect on treatment.

  • It’s important to wear elastics as directed. Lack of elastic wear is among the top reasons why braces stay on longer than expected.

  • Good hygiene and good elastic wear are two factors that patients have direct control over for successful orthodontic results.
